Fitness Options at Russell Sage

Physical Fitness Options at Russell Sage

by Gina Pizzino

Are you battling the dreaded “Freshman 15?” Perhaps you ate a few too many sweet treats during the holiday season? Or maybe you just want to feel more energized throughout the day or meet some new people?  If you’re looking for a way to get in shape and incorporate fitness into your daily routine Russell Sage has several options for you.

The Fitness Center at Robinson

The campus gym, also known as the Gator Pit, is located in the Robinson Athletic Center.  Recently renovated, the gym offers several types of equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, upright bikes, recumbent bikes, steppers and rowers.  Stability balls, medicine balls, a strength circuit, and numerous free weights are also available.  Mats are also provided for stretching and floor exercises. The Gator Pit is open every day, with varying hours of operation.

The Pool

Another option available to Russell Sage students is the pool, located in the basement of the Vanderheyden building.  For a complete list of gym and pool hours see the Recreation and Fitness section at www.Sage.edu.

Group Exercise Classes

If you do not feel comfortable in the gym or pool environments, group exercise classes are another great way to become active. Group classes offer motivation and an opportunity to meet new people with a similar interest in fitness.   Russell Sage offers several group exercise classes including Zumba®, yoga, and karate.  The dates, times, and locations of group classes can be found at the Robinson Athletic Center.

Intramural and Club Sports

Another physical fitness option available to the Russell Sage community is intramural and club sports. Team sports are another great way to meet new people and enjoy physical fitness.  Several intramural and club sports are offered to both Russell Sage and Sage students including flag football, basketball, floor hockey, indoor soccer, ultimate frisbee, and crew. For more information on intramural or club sports, visit the Student Life page on the Sage Web site.  If you would like information regarding a specific program, contact Jill Grebert at grebej@sage.edu.

The Nutrition Club

The Nutrition Club welcomes all Russell Sage students, including those who are not studying Nutrition Science.  The next meeting will be held Wednesday, January 27 at 1:00 PM.  The club meets in the Nutrition Lounge located on the third floor in the Ackerman building.  For more information on club events, contact Beth Richardson at richae@sage.edu.

The Library: Magazine and Books on Fitness & Nutrition

The library is a great source for fitness and nutrition information.  Several magazines are available including Health, Women’s Health, Self, and Mind+Body. In addition to finding motivational tips, these magazines include healthy recipes and sample workouts.  Furthermore, many of these publications are designed specifically for a female audience.

I encourage you to try all these options.  If you’re feeling less than motivated to workout on a consistent basis, find a gym buddy.  A friend who is reliable and goal oriented will make sure you don’t skip workouts or run into a fitness rut! Just 30 minutes a day, four to five days per week, will have you on your way to feeling more energized and a little more confident in your skinny jeans!
