Overheated classrooms sizzle brains

Written by Elizabeth Johnson

Troy, NY – Just think, it’s August and you’re a college student on your first week back to school. Its 90 degrees outside, which doesn’t seem that bad when you think about the air conditioned classroom you’ll be sitting in. To your surprise you walk in and not only are the classrooms hot but it feels 5 degrees hotter than it is outside. I think most people at Russell Sage can agree that we should have air conditioning in our classrooms, especially starting semesters during the hottest season.

Not only are we just coming back from our long and beautiful summer vacations but the first week back is extremely hot. When asking students about the way they feel on the topic of hot classrooms, most agreed that they are distracted by the heat or that we should have air conditioning. Air conditioning may not be possible financially but it is hard to wrap your head around when you realize that Sage College of Albany has air conditioned classrooms. Crystal Keenan, a student from SCA said she was shocked when she realized Russell Sage did not have air conditioning in the classrooms or labs. She also stated that SCA does have air conditioning in their classrooms.

“I am distracted during class because the whole time all I can do is look out the window at Sage Park wishing I was outside on such a beautiful day,”  is also what Nicole Reid said when asked about her opinion on hot classrooms.

It’s hard to focus in class when students and teachers are complaining; watching the clocks, and wiping their foreheads every five seconds knowing the weather outside is beautiful.   Professors are standing at the front of the classroom trying to get through the lectures. Imagine having to stand in front of the class, talk the whole time, pass out papers, and even have to move around the classroom during the lecture. The heat in the classrooms affects us all.

For many people hot classrooms may be a small stressor. College students have the stress of tests, studying, homework, and cramming for classes. They shouldn’t have to struggle with losing focus in class because of the heat.
