Opinion: Parking is a…[beep]!

Written by Breanna Pascale

A commuter’s world is a different world than that of a campus resident.  My day starts a little bit earlier than those students on campus. I mean I can’t just roll out of bed in my p.js. Well ok, I go to RSC, pajamas are acceptable.  I do not have the luxury of walking across campus from my dorm.

After I scrape the frost from my window, and heat up the car it is off to Troy I go.  While I slow down First Street looking for that amazing parking spot, I realize, “slim chance.” So I circle the small parking lot.  Apparently those ten other commuters got there before me.  Not a spot available. We all know what happens if you park in a “staff spot.”  That lovely yellow ticket shows up like magic.  Then I try the big parking lot. How is it already full? It is 9 a.m.  What I also find amusing this past week is that the majority of those cars still had snow on them from the night before.  I guess all residents are allowed to have cars. Off to venture through Troy to find a spot.  After I find a spot in what feels like Watervliet I am finally in class.  I then get frustrated that I have a forty dollar parking permit hanging from my mirror that can’t guarantee me a spot.

That brings me to my left out feeling I have as a commuter. I loved hearing the stories about Rally. (Go Red Devils!) I did however feel like I wasn’t invited to the big party. I know I received emails, and invites to the events. However, living 15 minutes away from school, and Rally events happening at night, it is hard to justify going out.  Plus, how would the upper class women trash my room?   Other clubs like the Sagettes meet at 9pm. I know it isn’t too late, but safety comes into play with parking and transportation.

I know it was my choice not to live on campus. I am a returning non-traditional student. Living on campus wouldn’t fit my life style. I would like to feel included with campus events.  If any other commuters would like to get the commuters board up and really running let me know.  Contact me at pascab@sage.edu.  (We can meet in the commuters lounge.)

Just wondering, what does a forty dollar parking permit promise these days? I understand there are 370 commuter students, and I would guess at least half are on campus at one time. I don’t think there are enough parking spaces for all those cars in addition to the faculty and staff and the “on-campus” students who bring cars. How is this issue being addressed?

Debbie, sorry it has taken me two months to respond to this. I am not too sure what that permit promises. I know this..as the Fall semester is fast approaching I am not purchasing a parking permit. The amount of times I got to park in eith lot was not worth $40. I would much rather spend that money else where. I will look into it as soon as school resumes. Thank you, for your concern as well!
