Sage Helps Celebrate Troy’s Quadricentennial Celebration
By: Samantha Brierley
On September 22, 2009, Members of the Sage community came out to help celebrate Troy’s rich history at Sage Park.
Pre-school children from daycares in the Capital Region came with their teachers to take part in the celebration.
The celebration consisted of Professor and Chair of the English Department, David Salomon, dressed up as Henry Hudson. The purpose of the costume was to commemorate the day that Hudson sailed up the Hudson River in the 1600s. Salomon joined the pre-school children in taking pictures behind a replica of Henry Hudson’s ship, the Halfmoon. The Halfmoon replica was designed by Russell Sage College Creative and Performing Arts students. Students from Education Professor Ellen Adam’s class came to help as well as work-study students. Adams students helped the pre school children color boats and played games.
The students and Salomon were joined by singer and songwriter Ruth Pelham and her “Music Mobile”. Pelham spends her time traveling around in a van called the “Music Mobile”. She sang to the children songs that she made up on the spot while strumming her acoustic guitar. She also played music from a megaphone which was positioned on her windshield. Other events included a magician and a face painter later in the afternoon.
