At the invitation of The Sage Colleges, the Underground Railroad Project of the Capital Region (URHPCR) has established an office on the Troy campus. In addition, Russell Sage College Dean Sharon Robinson has appointed URHPCR founders, Mary Liz Stewart and Paul Stewart, as Scholars-in-Residence at Sage.

A well-attended reception in honor of the URHPCR office and the new Scholars-in-Residence was held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Buchman Pavilion on the Troy campus. The reception included a brief program featuring greetings from President Susan Scrimshaw, Dean Robinson, and Professor Andor Skotnes, as well as remarks by URHPCR project founders Paul Stewart and Mary Liz Stewart.

Additionally, the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region will hold its ninth annual conference at Russell Sage College on February 26-28, 2010. The conference is entitled Gender, Class, Race, and Ethnicity in Abolutionism on the Underground Railroad and in the Struggle Since.

Organized by the URHPCP in collaboration with the Rensselaer County Historical Society, the conference brings together a wide spectrum of scholars, authors, and members of the community. This year’s keynote speaker will be Rhonda Y. Williams, Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University and a History News Network “Top Young Historian.”

Professor Andor Skotnes has worked with the URHPCR for the last five years and he states, “During my two and a half decades in public history, I have never encountered a more impressive and interesting community based history project. Having the URHPCR present on our campuses will be a great asset to our students in particular, and to our colleges in general.”
