Troy, NY – To many ordinary students, Russell Sage College’s Science Hall may seem like any other building on campus, but to those involved in the biology, chemistry, and other science programs, it is a place of excitement, knowledge, and constant learning. Students, of course, learn a great deal about the world in the lectures and labs that go on daily within these classrooms. It is not, however, a place of learning for students only. As true scientists, the faculty members of the science department constantly seek new knowledge through outside research and studies.
One way to learn about the many different undertakings of our esteemed faculty is to look at the profile that each professor has on Sage’s website. Here one can find brief descriptions of individual staff members’ interests in their respective fields, as well as the ways they have contributed to our world. For example, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Earth & Planetary Science Thomas C. Keane, Ph.D. lists experience in researching fields such as development and quality control of pharmaceuticals using chemistry, which helps our society through finding new drugs to treat diseases and making sure that they are safe for public use.
In the biology department, Associate Professor of Biology Dorothy Matthews, Ph.D. is also conducting research to improve health. Recent research on mice raised in sterile environments as opposed to more natural environments may suggest some of the impact that today’s sanitized world has on human brains. Are we losing intelligence as we fight against disease? Is it too early to say? This research may have fascinating results in the future.
These are only a few examples of the work going on at Russell Sage every day. The Sage faculty is always making advances as the field of science progresses. For more information about Sage’s science department and staff, please visit the Sage Colleges’ website at www.sage.edu.
