Sage Offering TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Classes in Fall

Posted by Elyse Beaudoin

Classes offered at no cost to anyone in the community 16 years of age or older interested in learning the English language.

Sage College of Albany will be holding Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) classes for recent refugees and immigrants placed in Albany County starting September 2010. This partnership with the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) will be a free service provided by the college to the community as a whole.

The curriculum will be based on two ten week course blocks. Classes will be once a week on Mondays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The first block of learning offered in the fall will work on elementary skill building and foundations. The spring block will build more formally with student’s progression through the course. The goal is to provide learners with a two semester curriculum that continues to build on previous course content while allowing new students to enter based on a rolling enrollment/acceptance process.

The classes will be open to any and all individuals wishing to learn the English language who are 16 years of age and older. Community members not affiliated with the USCRI but wishing to attend an ESOL course are encouraged to also attend classes.

The TESOL courses will be instructed and led by Vincent Porfirio, Assistant Dean of Students and English and Modern Languages adjunct faculty. The USCRI will be directing refugees and immigrants in Albany to the course as well as providing supplemental teaching materials and tutors for learners.

Faculty, administrators, and students interested in volunteering their time with the program please contact Sage Professor Vincent Porfirio (porfiv@sage.edu 518-292-1753).

This is a wonderful service being offered by Sage to the community. Thank you for posting this online. I will be sure to let my chuch know about this. We will usually have people that don’t speak that much English attend our Sunday services and this would be a wonderful oppurtunity for them to learn English for free.

Thank you again for posting. I will be sure to contact Sage.

    Respectfully,
    Stephanie B.
