Sage’s Sally Lawrence to Receive Lifetime Service Award

The Academy for Character Education at The Sage Colleges is pleased to announce the 7th Annual Champions of Character Awards Banquet on March 24, 2010, from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Franklin Plaza in Troy, New York.  The event honors distinguished schools and community members across New York State and beyond who have gone the extra mile to build and reinforce positive character in children and adults. John J. Nigro, President, Nigro Companies and Karen Bilowith, President/CEO of the Community Foundation of the Capital Region serve as Honorary Co-Chai

Dr. Sally A. Lawrence, Vice President for Academic Affairs at The Sage Colleges is the recipient of the Lifetime Distinguished Service Award. This prestigious award, presented only three times since the Academy’s inception, recognizes the culmination of a lifetime of exemplary service, commitment and contributions to character education in both education and community. Lawrence is most responsible for bringing The Academy for Character Education, which is affiliated with the School of Education, to Sage in 2003. Lawrence has served as a model of outstanding character throughout her lifetime of distinguished service. Previous winners include Dr. Thomas Lickona (“Mr. Character Education”) in 2003 and Congressman Michael McNulty in 2009.

Chatham Middle School in Columbia County will receive the prestigious New York State School of Character Award which honors the school with the strongest commitment to character education. Now in the running to be a National School of Character Education, this is the first Capital Region school to be honored with this award.

Additionally, the following will receive special awards and recognitions:

Gabrielle Pike, seventh grade, Rensselaer Middle School, Rensselaer;
Robert Griffin, eighth grade, Maple Avenue Middle School, Saratoga;  Coleman Reardon, eighth grade, Cohoes Middle School, Cohoes; Rachel Glock, senior, Guilderland High School, Guilderland; Giovanni Iain Cox, Graduate Student, SUNYA; Allyson Van Houten, Sage College of Albany and Will Davie, Russell Sage College.

A special Student Organization Leadership Award will be presented to the Lansingburgh Middle School and High School Friends of Rachel Club, Lansingburgh.
