Sage Engages at Prospect and Washington Parks
Members of the Sage Colleges help clean-up the community.
On Monday, October 19th, students, faculty, and staff from the Sage Colleges raked and cleaned Prospect Park (Troy, NY) and Washington Park (Albany, NY) and planted bulbs on the Sage campuses as part of the presidential inauguration week.
This community service project was coordinated by the Inauguration Committee. The new president of the Sage Colleges, Susan Scrimshaw, believes that the colleges should be performing community services aside from services that involve monetary value.
“The president is all about community service,” said Pat Roberts, a career specialist at the Advisement and Career Planning Center in Russell Sage’s Hart Hall.
Ms. Roberts was only one of the faculty and staff members who were helping the cause at Prospect Park. David Milford, senior associate dean of Campus Life was there, along with sports information director of athletics and recreation, Ann King, and Cheryl MacNeil, an assistant professor in Russell Sage’s Occupational Therapy Department.
Cheryl MacNeil facilitated one of her community based classes to join the effort, as did other Sage professors. Many of the students enrolled in this class were also members of the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA). The purpose of SOTA is to “advocate and promote occupational therapy in a community framework,” said SOTA president, Meghan Davey. SOTA’s next project will be to volunteer at St. Joseph’s House and Shelter on Ferry Street in Troy, NY to help feed those struggling with hunger.
The numerous clubs and organizations at the Sage Colleges work to better the surrounding community through joint efforts. Prospect and Washington parks are just two of the many community out-reaches that Sage students provide.
