SPORTS: Sage Athletes Dedicated to Success in Class and on the Field
Three hours in class, one hour in the training room, three hours on the bus, one hour to warm up, two hours for game time, three more hours on the bus: thats a typical game day for a Sage athlete. Thirteen hours dedicated to your sport in one day; to someone who does not play a sport, it seems like a lot of time and a huge commitment, and you might even wonder why someone would put that much time into a game.
It is weeks like this past week that make it all worth it.
Sage soccer has been working hard all season, pushing themselves through tough workouts and numerous injuries, yet the Gators pulled it all together on Saturday, defeating reigning conference champion Saint Joseph’s College 1-0. The Gators’ season leading scorer, Rebecca Marszalek, scored the game’s only goal with eighteen minutes left.
Junior Brittany McDonald racked up a career-high nineteen saves on Saturday, upping her season saves percentage to .828, with 48 saves. For this performance, McDonald was named Skyline Conference Player of the Week.
On Saturday, the volleyball team took to the court as they hosted Skyline Conference opponents Farmingdale State College and the College of Maritime in a tri-match. The Gators dominated, beating both teams in three games a piece; Sage would not allow either team to score more than thirteen points in any given game.
Despite low numbers, Sage has been dominating the Skyline Conference again this season, still yet to lost a conference match since joining the Skyline in 2007. All players on the team have been contributing to the program’s success. For her efforts this week, Nicole Corbett was named co-Gator of the Week along with soccer’s McDonald.
With a victory over Bard, Sage tennis remains unbeaten in conference play. Not only is the team riding a six match winning streak, two Gators were selected to to represent Sage at the 2009 ITA East Regional Tournament at William Smith. The Wilson/ITA Northeast Women’s Championships featured the top NCAA Division III schools in the region.
The Gators will continue to compete throughout the fall semester, make sure you get out there to show your support!
